MODERATOR – Dr. Prateek Sharma, MD

SPEAKER – Dr. Uma Mahadevan

Practical Approaches and Dietary Strategies in IBD

Dr. Mahadevan delivers a practical, patient-focused overview of the latest therapies and dietary strategies for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). She emphasizes that while clinical trial data is important, the real goal is to help clinicians confidently choose the best therapy for each patient.

Key Highlights Include:

  • A review of newly approved IBD therapies and how they compare.

  • The importance of diet: Ultra-processed foods should be avoided, and there is emerging data supporting the benefits of coconut water and specific exclusion diets for Crohn’s disease.

  • Discussion of herbal options like curcumin and Qing Dai, with a reminder to monitor for side effects.

  • Mesalamine is FDA-approved for ulcerative colitis but not effective for Crohn’s disease.

  • Steroids are for induction only, not maintenance; budesonide is the only FDA-approved steroid.

  • Thiopurines may be used for maintenance but are not effective for induction.

  • Overview of biologics and small molecules: Vedolizumab (Entyvio), IL-23 agents (ustekinumab, risankizumab), anti-TNFs (infliximab, adalimumab, golimumab, certolizumab), and JAK inhibitors (tofacitinib, upadacitinib).
